The Upper House does everything the opposite way to a typical grand hotel, and it works beautifully. There is no formal lobby, no check-in desk, no fuss. Instead you are shown quietly to a room designed by Andre Fu, generously large by Hong Kong standards, full of natural materials and clever, calming detail.
The whole place feels more like a serene private residence than a hotel, right down to the free minibar and the art-lined stairwell. The rooftop restaurant, Salisterra, is a destination in its own right.
The Verdict
The most soothing hotel in a frenetic city, and a favourite of people who travel for a living. If you value calm and design over marble and gold, book here.
Dinner at Salisterra on the top floor as the light drops and Hong Kong's forest of towers switches on around you.
